HACK FEVM

The world's first hackathon on the FEVM, the Ethereum compatible layer of the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM). Join us to build on the frontier of Web3.

Build on the new frontier.

What use is computing without storage? For too long, blockchains have been defined by a frustrating tradeoff—should my decentralized network focus on compute, or on storage? We've seen incredible innovation on both sides—Ethereum the world's largest computer—and IPFS & Filecoin, the world's largest decentralized storage networks.

While we've seen thousands of groundbreaking DApps developed harnessing the power of these technologies, under the hood, they require complex scaffolding, disjointed layers, or complicated developer patterns. Sometimes even, decentralized storage is disregaded, opting instead to return to the "easier" centralized methods.

A small team of builders at Protocol Labs set out to change that, and with the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM), have turned the Filecoin blockchain into a programmable platform that developers can deploy programs to, finally uniting compute and data on a single network.

But they did not stop there... The FEVM creates a runtime within the FVM which simulates the Ethereum Virtual Machine, making all smart contracts which compile to EVM bytecode, such as Solidity contracts, executable on the Filecoin blockchain.

With completely decentralized compute and storage united once more—we're more excited than ever for this new frontier—and for what you'll build.

Build with the entire ecosystem at your back

At Hack FEVM, you'll have the support of a huge community of experts, mentors, sponsors, developer advocates, and other community members who want to help you build something awesome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can hack on FVM?
FEVM is the fully EVM compatible version of FVM. Anyone who can write & deploy smart contracts using solidity would be able to hack as part of this hackathon.
What tooling can I use FVM with?
The FVM supports EVM smart contracts out of the box. It emulates EVM bytecode at the low-level, supporting contracts written in Solidity, Vyper, and Yul. You can continue using all the developer tooling you're familiar with: Remix, Truffle, Hardhat, OpenZeppelin SDK, and more. You will be able to access Filecoin system features easily with a filecoin.sol library, and a mock will be provided for the hack. Most smart contracts ported to Filecoin shouldn't require changes nor auditing.
What is Hack FEVM?
Hack FEVM is an event bringing together some of the top minds and experts in Ethereum and ETHGlobal's return to San Francisco. We enable teams to make something great in only 36 hours by providing an abundance of hacking resources like mentors, sponsors, and software. Sleeping is optional, but trying something new is not!
I'm new to the FVM & Ethereum, can I participate?
Absolutely! Firstly, everyone at the event is going to be new to the FVM, that's why this event is special! Our events are open to both beginners and veterans of the web3 world. This event in particular will be tailored to attendees who have experience with Web2 technologies and are interested in building on Web3 for the first time.
How much does it cost to attend?
Hack FEVM is 100% free for hackers. All that we ask of you is that you focus on building your project, check-in with us on your progress regularly, and participate in the community we build around this hackathon.
Is there a code of conduct?
Yes! For years, our core ethos has been to make it easy for anyone to dream big. To that end, we've developed a Code of Conduct.
How many people can be on a team?
You can form teams of up to 5 people. There are no restrictions for team members, so you can team up with hackers of any country or experience level!
Can I start working on my hack before the event?
No. In the interest of fairness, attendees should not be working on their projects before Hack FEVM begins and we do not allow participants to work on pre-existing projects. However, you can familiarize yourself with all the tools and technologies you intend to use beforehand!
